Banská Bystrica is a city and municipality in Slovakia situated on the River Hron in the valley of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. The city is one of the most inhabited settlements of the country. Banská Bystrica is known since the 9th century when here were built churches, forts, shops and others. Banská Bystrica is the capital of the region and has the population of about 80,000 people. Here are located the Matej Bel University and a lot of summer and winter resorts. The main sectors of economy are tourism, wood and mechanical industries.
The city of Banská Bystrica is an ancient city with a long history. It preserved a lot of historical monuments and natural landscapes. But the main tourist attraction of Banská Bystrica is the City Castle. It served as the defensive fort and protected the treasury. Now there only remains of the walls and several churches.
